Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) for Tuberculosis Control: A Handbook for Country Programmes
This handbook is a guide to support the design and implementation of effective advocacy, communication and social mobilization activities in tuberculosis (TB) control at country level. A significant scale-up of such activities is needed to achieve global targets and are particularly essential with the growing emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis. ACSM activities can support timely diagnosis and treatment completion, which will minimize the chances that resistant bacteria will evolve. This handbook is primarily intended for staff planning, organizing and supervising TB control activities at the national level but can also be used at the provincial, state and regional levels and by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and others: communications officers, epidemiologists, program supervisors, TB medical specialists, nurses, bacteriologists, statisticians, health educators, logistics officers and trainers.

Manual for the Bacteriological Diagnosis of Tuberculosis: Standards and Technical Guidelines—Part 1, Smear Tests
Although technological progress has promoted innovations in bacteriology, sputum-smear microscopy has not been subject to substantial technical modifications. However, new epidemiological situations—especially the incidence of tuberculosis among people living with HIV and the need to more rigorously guarantee the quality of results and human and environmental safetyhave promoted a new update of the standards seen in this special guide designed to strengthen laboratory capacity in Latin America.

Manual for the Bacteriological Diagnosis of Tuberculosis: Standards and Technical Guidelines—Part 2, Cultures
When diagnosing TB, cultures complement smear tests, since they can show viable bacilli present in limited quantity in a lesion sample, characterizing them so as to ascertain that it is indeed the TB bacillus and see if it is sensitive or resistant to TB drugs. Hence, the role of cultures is more important in scenarios with a median or low incidence of tuberculosis, with high levels of TB/HIV co-infection, and with a multiresistant medium or a high tuberculosis burden. An Integrated Approach to Controlling Tuberculosis in Indigenous Populations (Cochabamba, Bolivia, 23-24 October 2007)
Latin America is characterized as being a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural region of great diversity, with more than 650 indigenous populations. Indigenous peoples' right to health is limited by a series of obstacles to care, for which reason their rates of morbidity and mortality from prevalent diseases are higher than among the general population. To overcome these barriers, there is a need to study them and identify specific control strategies and care models that will work in places where health systems have yet to reach, with the ultimate objective of reducing the risk of illness and death. Prevention, control, and elimination of neglected diseases in the Americas: Pathways to integrated, inter-programmatic, inter-sectoral action for health and development
Over 210 million people in the Americas live below the poverty line. These impoverished and marginalized populations are heavily burdened with neglected communicable diseases. These diseases continue to enact a toll, not only on families and communities, but on the economically constrained countries themselves. The purpose of this paper is three fold. First, it focuses on a need for integrated "pro-poor" approaches and policies different from traditional approaches. Second, it outlines the need for a specific strategy for addressing these diseases and offers several entry points in the context of broad public health measures involving multiple sectors. Finally, the paper presents several initiatives from PAHO and other institutions that document the importance of integrated, inter-programmatic, and inter-sectoral approaches. Authors include PAHO experts from different areas and the PAHO Director. (BMC Public Health 2007, 7:6, doi:10.1186/1471-2458-7-6)

Tuberculosis (WHO Fact Sheet No. 104)
This official fact sheet provides basic information in all the major areas of TB. Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease. Like the common cold, it spreads through the air. Only people who are sick with TB in their lungs are infectious. When infectious people cough, sneeze, talk or spit, they propel TB germs, known as bacilli, into the air. A person needs only to inhale a small number of these to be infected. The disease is considered a priority in the Americas.

CD47.R18: Health of the Indigenous Peoples in the Americas
Taking note of the existence of inequities in health and access to health care services that affect more than 45 million indigenous people living in the Americas; and because the United Nations Millennium Declaration cannot be reached unless the specific health needs of excluded populations, such as indigenous peoples, are addressed, this resolution of the 47th PAHO Directing Council in 2006 sets for the mandate to take a multicultural approach to include these groups and work towards greater equity and better health for all.

Workshop to Develop an Implementation Methodology for the Public-Private Mix for Tuberculosis Control (PPM) (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, 1–2 June 2006)
The Public-Private Mix (PPM) is an initiative developed by WHO to facilitate the incorporation of all health providers, both public and private, into the fight against tuberculosis. There is evidence that PPM is at least as cost-effective as the publicly-offered form of DOTS and much better that conventional private non-DOTS care. It could thus be concluded that PPM-DOTS is a feasible initiative, both productive and cost-effective, for increasing case-finding, improving treatment results and offering equitable access to care and more affordable care for the poor. Priorities in Health
Two overarching themes emerge from the extensive research and analyses in this World Bank publication: (1) Current resources can yield substantial health gains if knowledge of cost-effective interventions were applied more fully. (2) Additional resources are needed in low-income countries to minimize the glaring inequities in health care. Increased resources would provide highly-effective interventions, expand research, and extend basic health coverage to more people. WHO contributed to this publication.
